One of the most important things to consider in this poor performing economy is your brand. When small business reduce its advertising they effectively begin to chip away at their established brand value. By keeping some form of advertising going even in tough times they are sending a message to their target audience that they are solid and will remain competitive. Another reason is your competition. Your competitors may reduce their expenses by slashing their advertising budgets, thus presenting you with the opportunity to capitalize on this by putting your name out there, when theirs is not. Remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Great information, Ryan! As I stated in the Marketing Group, those who don't believe in advertising find themselves advertising to sell their business! That's doubly important during an economically challenging time.
From an advertising person's perspective, I definately think that #3 on your list is the most important:

Advertising Gives You The Advantage Over Competitors Who
Cut Back. A five-year survey of more than 3,000 companies found
that advertisers who maintained or expanded advertising during a
troubled economy saw sales increase an average of 100%.

100% growth! 100%! Most business owners would be pleased with 50%. . .
shows you that if you have perserverance, you will reap the rewards. You just need to weather tough times and look ahead to a successful future when the market picks up. . .you will be happy you were one of the smart ones who did!
